Santa Monica Families for Safe Streets was founded in 2022 by a group of Santa Monica parents who are also transportation planners.
About Us
Santa Monica Families for Safe Streets is a Santa Monica-based parent advocacy group that is focused on getting kids to school and their activities safely.
We are extremely thankful for the City of Santa Monica's commitment to Vision Zero. But the City’s initiatives need community support to be effective. That’s where we parents can come in.
Our Approach
Our approach, the Safe Routes to School 6 E* Pyramid, surrounded by our community partners, is illustrated below. Engineering must serve a foundational role, followed by Education and Encouragement. Engagement, Evaluation and Equity must be addressed throughout.
Santa Monica Families for Safe Streets envisions leading and/or supporting engineering efforts to redesign our streets to make them slower and safer for our kids. Our tactics include:
Education: Learning about the City’s bicycle and pedestrian planning efforts and projects.
Advocating for more safe streets funding in Santa Monica and statewide.
School area safety audits with radar speed detector and solutions for safer streets
Our Team
Leading the efforts are our school-based Street Safety Captains. They provide on-the-ground support and leadership at the school and neighborhood level.
McKinley Elementary School - Juan and Sirinya Matute
Grant Elementary School - Boris Suchov
Franklin Elementary - Leonora Camner
Roosevelt Elementary - Eli Gil
We would love to have Street Safety Captains at every school citywide. Interested in joining our leadership team? Want to get in touch with someone on our team? Send us an email at info@santamonicafamilies.org.
